The unusual temple, erected in Yaroslavl in 1997, is well recognizable and is even depicted on a 1,000-ruble note. The chapel is located in the central part of the city, on the picturesque Korotosl embankment, right in front of the Holy Gates leading to the Transfiguration Monastery. It serves as an Orthodox church and at the same time plays the role of a monument that immortalized the feat of the members of the militia.

The history of construction and architectural features of the chapel of Our Lady of Kazan
The chapel dedicated to the icon of Our Lady of Kazan is one of the new architectural monuments of Yaroslavl. Its project was carried out by the Yaroslavl architect Grigoriev Lvovich Dainov. In shape, the tall temple simultaneously resembles a rocket and a hipped-roof church. In the center, it is covered with a colored stained-glass partition, which depicts the face of the Kazan Mother of God revered by Christians. A bell is also suspended here.
The Orthodox church was opened in memory of the 385th anniversary of the people's militia, which saved Russia from the Polish-Lithuanian invasion. It is known that this liberation movement originated in Nizhny Novgorod in 1612, during the Troubled Times, which were difficult for Russia. The militias marched to Moscow through Yaroslavl and stopped in this city, where new detachments from local residents began to join them. At a time when the military headquarters of the militia was located within the walls of the Transfiguration Monastery, ancient Yaroslavl, in fact, played the role of an unspoken Russian capital. On July 27, the militia left the walls of the monastery and continued on their way to Moscow. They took with them the icon of Our Lady of Kazan, the image of which is placed on the stained-glass window.
Inside the chapel, words of gratitude to the members of the people's militia are inscribed on the stone. There are also images of Christian saints revered by believers.
Every year on November 4, the day when in 1612 the capital of Russia was liberated by the militia from the invaders, a large procession takes place in Yaroslavl. It starts from the walls of the Kazan women's monastery and leads to the chapel, near which the townspeople traditionally leave many flowers.

The chapel is located on the Korotosl embankment of Yaroslavl.
By car. The federal highway M8 leads from Moscow to Yaroslavl. Within the city limits, it is called Moskovsky Prospekt. On it you need to cross the bridge over the Korotosl River. And then turn right to the Korotosl embankment, which leads to the chapel.

By train. From Moscow to Yaroslavl, express train trains reach in 3 hours 16 minutes. The journey by regular train takes from 4 to 5.5 hours. From the Moskovsky railway station in Yaroslavl, the distance to the Chapel of Our Lady of Kazan is 2.7 km. You can walk to it or drive up by minibus.
